3 Million Workers Received Jobless Benefits In Last Two Weeks of April, Most Since 2004
The number of new claims for unemployment insurance compensation fell by 18,000 to 365,000 seasonally adjusted in the week ended May 3, but a total of 3 million workers were receiving jobless benefits in the last two weeks of April, the most in four years, the Labor Department's Employment and Training Administration reported this week.  (05/09/08)

GAO Report: Employment and Training Program Grants: Evaluating Impact and Enhancing Monitoring Would Improve Accountability
GAO recommends that Labor take steps to ensure that it can evaluate the initiatives' impact, documents compliance with statutory program requirements for noncompetitive grant awards, and develops and implements a risk-based monitoring approach for WIRED grants.  (05/08/08)
GAO Report: Employment Verification: Challenges Exist in Implementing a Mandatory Electronic Employment Verification System
The GAO report found a mandatory E-Verify program would necessitate an increased capacity at both U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and SSA to accommodate the estimated 7.4 million employers in the United States. According to USCIS, as of April 2008, more than 61,000 employers have registered for E-Verify, and about half are active users.   (05/08/08)
