BLS Commissioner Discusses CES Budget At Winter Policy Forum
During the NASWA Winter Policy Forum, February 17-19, NASWA's Board of Directors met with Keith Hall, Commissioner, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), to discus BLS' proposal contained in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2011 budget to centralize the production of monthly State and Metropolitan Area data estimates developed through the Current Employment Statistics (CES) program.   (03/08/10)
Congress Approves 30 Day Short-Term UI Extension
The U.S. Senate approved legislation on Tuesday, March 2nd (H.R. 4691) to extend retroactively Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (EUC08), the Federal Additional Compensation (FAC) program and the temporary provisions for the Federal-State Extended Benefits (EB) program. The 30-day extension allows these programs to continue until April 5, 2010.   (03/08/10)
Initial Jobless Claims Fall From 3-Month High
According to data released from the Employment and Training Administration (ETA), claims for U.S. jobless benefits dropped last week from a three-month high. However, the report also showed the number of people who have used their regular state benefits and are now collecting Federal Extended Unemployment Compensation (EUC) increased by about 198,000 to 5.87 million in the week ending February 13.  (03/08/10)
NASWA To Produce Leading Employment Indicators To Track Progress Of Economic Recovery
NASWA has compiled data and created charts on a number of leading employment indicators which will be released on a monthly basis to help track trends in the labor market and the beginnings of the nation's economic recovery from the Great Recession.   (03/08/10)
Online Job Demand Shows Some Improvement
Figures released by The Conference Board this week indicate online job demand declined by 66,900 to 3,957,000 in February. Online job vacancies had averaged gains of nearly 248,000 for the previous three months.   (03/08/10)
U.S. Unemployment Rate Holds At 9.7%; NonFarm Jobs Little Changed In February
The nation's labor market showed little change in February as the unemployment rate for the nation held steady at 9.7 percent. One year earlier the rate was 8.2 percent.  (03/08/10)
